Fast Fact #25

A FULL-TIME worker paid the minimum wage (at McDonald's or Wal-Mart, for instance) would earn what annual income? What is their MAXIMUM take home pay?

At $6.75 per hour a full-time worker earns $14,040.00 GROSS each year, and has a maximum take home pay of just $10,860 per year (assuming 15% federal income taxes, just 7.65% FICA and Medc, and NO state or local taxes, insurance deductions, etc.). These full-time workers are below the poverty level if they are the head of a 4-person household and they therefore qualify for welfare, food stamps, etc. This means that taxpayers are subsidizing employers who pay minimum wage. This is another example of hidden "corporate welfare" which exists throughout our economic system.
